Estimados colegas,

Al pie encontrarán información sobre los talleres del mes de noviembre y diciembre de 2012 que dictará Dayna House, Senior English Language Fellow del Departamento de Estado de EEUU, quien durante 2012 se desempeña en nuestra Dirección brindando sesiones sobre metodología de la enseñanza para docentes de idiomas.

Les recordamos que además de los talleres mensuales, docentes de todos los Niveles  y/o estudiantes de Profesorado de establecimientos de gestión estatal de CABA pueden solicitar el dictado de uno o más talleres en su Institución (ver detalles en Nota al pie).

Taller: ADAPTING THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK TO YOUR STUDENTS’ NEEDS

Resumen: “Why should individual teachers reinvent activities when publishers have already developed appropriate instructional sequences, lesson designs, and activities for each subject? Textbooks are designed so that the format of all lessons is the same. This uniformity makes textbooks easier to write and easier to teach from, but it can also lead to boredom as the same sequence of activities is followed day after day. This also means that the design of the textbook is "one size fits all." the materials are designed to appeal to the same "generic" student interests. Teachers know that a single set of materials cannot meet all the needs and interests of all their students. Use the texts, but supplement and adapt them to the needs of your students; this builds confidence.”

Taller: USING AND CREATING YOUR OWN JAZZ CHANTS

Resumen: “Jazz Chants help non-native speakers get the "feel" of American English. Students learn stress, rhythm and intonation patterns by following along with these catchy tunes. It's an effective and enjoyable way to learn and they can be a great help in your classroom as it will give you the sense of jazz, timing and fun as you practice them together.”

Taller: ENERGIZING THE EFL CLASSROOM THROUGH INTERNET ACTIVITIES

Resumen: “Keeping students interested and engaged is a daily challenge for EFL teachers. One of the advantages of the Internet is that it provides new possibilities for assisting teachers to successfully meet this challenge. Internet-based activities can potentially energize the ESL/EFL classroom if the teacher set clear goals and strategies for the activities. Activities of different kinds offer new, interesting ways for students to practice and sharpen their English skills as well as help ensure that students' interest is retained and that they get maximum value from these opportunities.”

“Teaching listening skills is one of the most difficult tasks for any ESL/EFL teacher. This is because successful listening skills are acquired over time and with lots of practice. Speaking a language involves accuracy, using all the components correctly. Both types of practice are equally important, although some traditional approaches can concentrate rather too much on accuracy tasks which result in students speaking like a grammar book. This workshop will focus on providing teachers with suggestions and activities to help their students.”

Taller: "Testing - Creating Valid Evaluations for Reading and Writing" 
Resumen: "Can we 'measure' a student’s ability to understand a foreign language? This workshop will give teachers strategies for designing tests that are contextualized, integrative, interactive, communicative and that require cognitive processing on the part of the students. Evaluate the student's proficiency in the target language rather than the grammatical knowledge. Effective testing requires careful planning to identify if we are evaluating “knowing how to use language” or “the knowledge of language”.

Taller: "Motivating your Students" 
Resumen: “Teachers often feel that students are basically lazy, that they have been taking English forever and haven’t learned a thing or that they are not really interested or motivated. We can identify three levels or layers of motivation in language learning that are “operational,” or accessible to direct influence by the teacher. If we can make progress in each of these layers, we can become more motivating teachers, and we will become happier and more successful at teaching.”

Taller: "TESTING - CREATING VALID EVALUATIONS FOR ALL FOUR SKILLS: LISTENING AND SPEAKING" 
Resumen: "Finding a better way to evaluate the student's proficiency in the target language rather than evaluate a simple display of the student's grammatical knowledge. Effective testing requires careful planning.  Can we 'measure' the ability of a person to understand (listen, speak) in a foreign language?   Are we evaluating knowing how to use language or the knowledge of language?  The best way to identify what the goals of a course are is to look at the tests a teacher produces.  If  tests are purely grammatical in spite of the fact students are taught communicative skill at least 30% of the time during class, one can conclude that the real purpose of this class is to teach the student grammatical competence.  This workshop will give teachers strategies for designing tests that are contextualized, integrative, interactive, communicative and that require cognitive processing on the part of the students to facilitate learning English in the EFL classroom."

Resumen: "This workshop focuses on helping teachers understand the limitations that a textbook may have, how to overcome deficiencies and how to supplement textbooks so that the student can better benefit from the English class."

TALLER 4: "The ECRIF Framework - Looking at how students learn" 

Fecha: Martes 31 de julio 

Horario: 10.30 hs a 12 hs. 

Resumen: “This framework allows teachers to see activities and content from the perspective of student learning. ECRIF is a useful tool to analyze lessons plans so that teachers know they are providing students with what they need to learn the language. This workshop will focus on understanding what the ECRIF framework is and how to apply it to textbook activities and lesson plans through pair and group practice on course book pages and lesson plans the presenter will provide. 

*Note: The ECRIF Framework was developed by Josh Kurzweil and Mary Scholl between 2004 and 2005 as they wrote the book Understanding Teaching through Learning for McGraw-Hill and the School for International Training. 

**Note: Teachers should bring their current classroom book and sample lesson plans to the workshop.

La Prof. Dayna House participa del Programa de Senior English Language Fellows del Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos. De amplia trayectoria en la formación de docentes para la enseñanza de inglés como lengua extranjera, la Prof. Dayna House está interesada en metodologías comunicativas e inteligencias múltiples. Ha conducido seminarios y talleres en varias universidades en California, Brasil, Corea del Sur, México, Ecuador, Costa Rica y Perú.

Dirigido a: Docentes y estudiantes de Profesorados de TODAS LAS LENGUAS, pero serán dictadas en IDIOMA INGLÉS.

TALLER 1: “MOTIVATING YOUR STUDENTS”

Fecha: Lunes 18 de junio Horario: 10.30 a 12 hs.

Resumen: “Teachers often feel that students are basically lazy, that they have been taking English forever and haven’t learned a thing or that they are not really interested or motivated. We can identify three levels or layers of motivation in language learning that are “operational,” or accessible to direct influence by the teacher. If we can make progress in each of these layers, we can become more motivating teachers, and we will become happier and more successful at teaching.”

TALLER 2: “LESSON PLANNING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES”

Fecha: Martes 19 de junio Horario: 18 hs a 19.30 hs.

Resumen: “Learning strategies help both students and teachers achieve their goal in the language learning classroom. They should be an integral part of any lesson plan and should be communicated to the student at the beginning and end of the lesson. Learning strategies help focus students' attention on the lesson and what they are learning. Learning Strategies help the teacher identify what his or her goal for the class is and if the student is achieving the goal. They help both teacher and student feel successful." *NOTE*: Teachers should bring their current classroom book to this workshop.

TALLER 3: “EFFECTIVE USE OF VIDEO IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM”

Fecha: Miércoles 27 de junio Horario: 18 hs a 19.30 hs.

Resumen: “Audio Visual activities are memorable, relaxing, inexhaustible, fun and change the mood of the class. Students learn vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and stress through hearing English. They can also study grammar, functions, and learn about culture. Movies and Sitcoms allow students to make connections to people, places and events in their lives as a springboard for conversation and practicing all 4 skills. They allow students to socialize with each other, they can have fun learning and they will retain information better and learn about American Culture.”

Nos complace anunciar que la Prof. Dayna House, quien participa del Programa "Senior English Language Fellows" del Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos, brindará actividades de capacitación docente durante el ciclo lectivo 2012.

TALLER A PEDIDO: Docentes de idiomas del sistema estatal de todos los Niveles de la C.A.B.A. tienen la posibilidad de solicitar el dictado de un taller dictado por la Senior English Language Fellow Dayna House en su propio establecimiento, reuniendo a un grupo de colegas docentes o estudiantes de Profesorado del mismo u otros establecimientos de gestión estatal de la CABA.
