The Bilingual Advantage
A cognitive neuroscientist, Ellen Bialystok has
spent almost 40 years learning about how bilingualism sharpens the mind. Her
good news: Among other benefits, the regular use of two languages appears to
delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms.
Brain-boosting
bilingualism
Ellen Bialystok knows all about the many
brain-boosting benefits of bilingualism. “When you speak more than one language
you are always using your brain. It’s like constantly doing crossword puzzles,”
says Dr. Bialystok, a professor of psychology at York University and a leading
expert on the effects of bilingualism on both cognitive development in children
and mental health of the elderly.
